  As part of my goals for this next set of 100 days, I want to work through a minimum of three of the action goals from Alyson Stanfield‘s I’d Rather be in the Studio! Action 2 is all on organizing, something I have SLOWLY been pulling together. The business is at a point where a folder for me won’t cut it any more. Hubby handles the finances and anything with Ebay. He has the chart of accounts set up, all the ledgers updated, all Ebay items organized, and does the quarterly justifying of the books. He is the Felix in the family, and I certainly qualify as the Oscar.

That said, I can find anything I need in the organized chaos I sometimes live in – comes from 40 years of teaching and knowing immediately where something is, even if I can’t see the top of my desk. But now that I have time, I took Alyson’s suggestions and looked at so many different areas.

The answer for me was a large notebook with dividers. Now I have a place for emails, articles, lists – and every time something new comes up, I set up a new divider in the notebook. When we were on vacation for a dew days in San Diego, I brought the notebook to the beach and we sat and went through each section, brainstorming additions, corrections, new products, immediate followup, and the like. I think hubby was kind of impressed at how much I organized everything.

I particularly like that I can sit with the notebook each week, go through the sections and pick out what needs to be worked on for that particular week. I can add dates for finished items, move things around and change dates, and decide which project will get accomplished that week.

Of particular help was using the notebook to then help organize the computer desktop for all the images and emails and documents related to the business. Now I have major folders, especially for the licensing art, on the desktop, and I feel like I finally know where all the images are going to go. Case in point: we have Ebay photos from 2004, when we first started selling on line. Now there’s a folder of “old” Ebay photos, organized by year, as well as the most current images. I’ve done the same thing with the Etsy folder, and this will carry over to the Fine Art America photo. What helped in organizing all these images was finally figuring out how to work with Adobe Bridge in the Creative Suite. I love seeing all the photos at once!

The high school I work at is the arts magnet high school for the city. The kids have some amazing opportunities in both performing and visual arts. Imagine taking a class three times a week in all the Adobe programs – all updated, where you don’t have to worry about buying the programs, getting updates, and making sure your computer always works, plus hands-on instruction rather than learning yourself. Can you say “jealous?”

I think back to learning Pagemill waaaaayyyyy back when I was just starting my website in 1998…I still know a little code from teaching myself. Everything I’ve done has been self-taught, so I love the opportunities the kids have. About two weeks ago I walked to the end of the hallway to discover a new exhibit of student work, using Illustrator – a program I just haven’t had time to explore. The kids had to recreate some organic shapes (the pen tool makes me nuts….) and use some filters to develop their piece even further. All I could think of was what cool quilts these would make. There is glare (and the remains of some graffiti) on the showcase window, but I think you can get a good idea of what the kids are doing.

What I like about this is the blossoms. I am thinking they would look good in free-motion on a solid area of a quilt. See my dilemma below the pictures…….

Now, speaking of quilting designs….I need some help. I have two “older” quilts that I am requilting. I took the stitches out of one while in the hospital, and I’m working on the other one. I need suggestions as to quilting. I have grown beyond stippling, but I am still having trouble with actual designs that will work with the patterns. Here’s the first – four traditional blocks with marbled stars in a neon paint.

You can see all the old quilting. When I get all the invisible thread out, I’m going to soak it in warm water to see if I can make the lines disappear. But what should I do for quilting?

Here’s the other – a log cabin table runner done with marbled fabrics. What do you think? Just stitch in the ditch??

…that as of Friday at 3:40 PM, I now have 26 remaining sets of reports card to do and I CAN RETIRE!!! I tried looking at some type of countdown that would seem reasonable and now feel like an eternity. 1440 school days (at that time) wasn’t workin’ for me. Seven years wasn’t workin’, and neither was number of weeks. What did seem to catch on was the number of report periods for which I would need to do grades (how’s that from the Grammar Queen?). That was eminently do-able. So – 26 more sets of report cards.

The big question is whether I can last physically and mentally – my principal actually admitted that we have too much to do, and he needs to ease things for us. Ya think? And another question is whether or not I will go back there next year. I really need to explore some new options.

That said, I am now on vacation! For two weeks I can sleep late, not do school work, and just work on art. So I started by uploading my Contribute which arrived in the mail. Five hours later I was finally able to upload pics for Suzan to see. I had to call Adobe because evidently I was “missing” something for the download, which I got, and then had to figure out how to install. I had to all Suzan because I couldn’t seem to remember coding and passwords I had used for three years….but now we should be able to get back to Photoshop Tag and create more work. As long as the weather cooperates, we’re headed to Phoenix to meet half-way next Thursday. Yay!
